Reports from Nigeria suggest that federal civil servants in the country have received the long-awaited 40% salary increase promised by the government earlier this year. This news was confirmed by accounts gathered by federal civil servants in Kwara state, who stated that they received credit notifications of an increase in their arrears on Saturday, April 22. The pay rise was said to have been added to their April 2023 salary.
In addition, a senior civil servant in Kwara state, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated that the pay rise had come as promised and that some of their colleagues had also received their arrears. A civil servant in Ibadan was also reported as confirming the pay rise, saying that they had received their April 2023 salary along with their arrears.
According to LegitNews, the 40% pay rise was proposed by the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Productivity as a means of cushioning the impact of the planned removal of fuel subsidies. The Minister of Labour, Chris Ngige, confirmed that President Muhammadu Buhari had assented to the pay rise and that it had been included in the 2023 budget, with the effective date set for January 1, 2023.

Speaking on the pay rise, Ngige described it as a “peculiar allowance” for civil servants, given the current economic reality. He added that it was designed to help government workers cope with the rising inflation, living costs, transportation fares, housing, and electricity tariffs.
